Talk easy, listen hard
(and check the attitude)
Rebuilding Trust in Science, One Conversation at a Time
As scientists, we often live in a bubble—sometimes by necessity, sometimes by habit. But over time, that isolation can make us out of touch with the very people who should benefit from our work. The increasing politicization of science has only widened this gap.
It’s time we change that. We need to talk easy—simplifying and clarifying complex ideas without losing their essence—and listen hard to understand public needs and concerns with openness and respect.
Communicating science isn’t just about accuracy; it’s about trust. And trust isn’t built by data alone—it’s built through efforted dialogue, one that requires time, patience, and genuine engagement.
Good science doesn’t automatically earn public trust or relevance. We need to be intentional about how we engage, framing our work in ways that resonate beyond academia. In some ways, we must think of our research like a consumer product—its impact depends not just on its quality but also on how we present and promote it.
Let’s step out of our comfort zones. Let’s make science accessible, relatable, and responsive. If we want to “save science,” we need to meet people where they are. I'm ready to work with y'all!!
